A lot of making and of experience has gone to bring Mark Sheridan to the top-of-the-tree-position-as-a-comedian which he occupies to-day. He did not tumble into it accidentally. Nobody ever does really tumble into success. Plenty of people would like to think that they could, but they shirk or are ignorant of the trying long years of hard work, beginning at small things and working up bit by bit, that added to innate capacity ultimately bring the successful to any position of eminence that they happen to occupy. The MANCHESTER GUARDIAN says -

The Hippodrome.- “   There are some, not many ,performers who have established an ascendancy in the music-halls which allows them to  exercise certain command over the audience they entertain.  The audience is submissive, though knowing its own final authority, as democracies are known to  have been tolerant of rulers they have set up and can set down again, and it surrenders to the petty dominations of the lordling across the footlights, as kings and tyrants in their day bore with the hired foolery of their jesters.  The wise among the jesters knew infallibly the boundary line of privilege and presumption and took care to walk on the sunny side of their masters’ favour.  They have their successors in the race of jesters to the people among who Mr. Mark Sheridan is one of the adepts.  He has that gift of authority over his listeners which makes them passive contributors to their own amusements.  His reward is a warmth of favour which places him so near to those who enjoy the music-hall’s highest popularity that the difference probably does not trouble him in the least.
